Cherrapunji Travel Guide

Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra, is a popular tourist destination located in the state of Meghalaya in northeastern India. It holds the distinction of being one of the wettest places on Earth, with heavy rainfall throughout the year. The region’s breathtaking natural beauty, including lush green landscapes, mist-covered hills, and cascading waterfalls, attracts numerous visitors. One of the main attractions in Cherrapunji is its stunning waterfalls. Nohkalikai Falls, with a height of approximately 340 meters, is the tallest plunge waterfall in India and a major draw for tourists. Other notable waterfalls in the area include Dain-Thlen Falls, Kynrem Falls, and Seven Sisters Falls. Visitors can enjoy the mesmerizing views, take photographs, and even go trekking or rappelling around these waterfalls. The living root bridges are another unique feature of Cherrapunji. These bridges are made by interweaving the roots of the Ficus elastica tree species over many years, creating natural and sturdy walkways across streams and rivers. The most famous living root bridge is the double-decker bridge at Nongriat village, which is a popular trekking destination. The trek to the bridge involves descending steep stairs, crossing suspension bridges, and immersing oneself in the enchanting beauty of the surrounding rainforest. Cherrapunji also offers opportunities for adventure enthusiasts. The region’s hilly terrain and pleasant climate make it ideal for activities such as trekking, hiking, and camping. Exploring the nearby caves, such as Mawsmai Cave and Krem Phyllut, is also a thrilling experience. These limestone caves exhibit unique rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. For those interested in the cultural heritage of the area, Cherrapunji is home to the indigenous Khasi people. Visitors can interact with the locals, learn about their customs and traditions, and experience their warm hospitality. Traditional Khasi cuisine, which often includes dishes made from local ingredients like bamboo shoots and fermented fish, is also worth trying. In recent years, Cherrapunji’s tourism infrastructure has improved, with the development of hotels, guesthouses, and homestays to accommodate visitors. However, the region still retains its natural charm and offers a serene and tranquil environment away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Overall, Cherrapunji’s tourism revolves around its lush landscapes, waterfalls, living root bridges, adventure activities, and the opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich cultural heritage of the Khasi people. It is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those looking to explore offbeat and picturesque locations.
